Zygomatic, Pterygoid and Nasal Implants

Zygomatic, pterygoid and nasal implants offer effective treatment options when conventional dental implants are not sufficient. For patients with excessive bone loss in the maxilla and maxillary sinus, tooth restoration can be very difficult. These special implants help to restore functionality by replacing missing teeth in patients with severe bone loss or who are not suitable for conventional implant treatment, without the need for additional surgical procedures such as bone grafting.

Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic implants are a special type of dental implant recommended for patients with advanced jaw bone loss that cannot be treated with conventional methods, with bone loss or insufficiently developed upper jaw bone. These implants are placed in the zygomatic bone, which is located in the cheekbones. Unlike conventional implants, these extra-long implants are placed directly into the zygomatic bone without the need for additional surgical procedures such as bone grafting. This method provides a strong foundation even in cases where the maxillary sinus is weak, maximising the integration of the implant into the jawbone and ensuring long-term durability.

Pterygoid Implants

Pterygoid implants are implants that are inserted into the pterygoid plate to increase bone support in the upper jaw. They are used when there is insufficient bone in the posterior maxilla. They can also be used in combination with zygomatic implants to create a larger support surface and increase the stability of dental crowns. They offer an important solution in cases of complex edentulism or insufficient bone volume where conventional implant placement techniques are inadequate. By helping patients restore chewing function and achieve aesthetic results, they also help prevent jawbone loss and preserve the natural structure of the face.

Nasal Implants

Nose implants are an important alternative for patients with insufficient bone in the upper jaw. These implants are inserted into the bone structure at the root of the nose and provide stability in the front of the mouth so that dentures can be fitted. They play an important role in restoring aesthetically and functionally critical front teeth. Nasal implants compensate for aesthetic and functional losses in patients with a lack of bone in the upper jaw. They enhance patient self- confidence by providing an effective solution, particularly in overcoming deterioration of the jaw structure due to tooth loss or deformity. They can also have a positive effect on chewing function and speech.

What is the procedure?

On the first visit, the decayed portion of the tooth is removed, and the remaining healthy dental structure of the tooth will dictate to the dentist on whether to use an inlay or onlay. A dental impression is taken of the tooth and surrounding teeth. The tooth is then filled with a temporary filling material, while the dental impression is forwarded to the laboratory.

On the second visit the temporary filling is removed, and the inlay/onlay is fitted to and adjusted where necessary. The inlay/onlay will be returned to the laboratory for polishing. While this is happening, the remains of the original tooth are cleaned. The final inlay/onlay is cemented into position using a dental cement.Zygomatic, pterygoid and nasal implant treatments are performed under general anaesthesia in our 6 operating rooms where we can perform surgery under general anaesthesia. In this way, we offer our patients a comfortable and safe treatment experience.

Inlays/onlays are prepared in our in-house dental laboratory, allowing for the procedure to be completed in just two visits to our clinic.

Who are zygomatic, pterygoid and nasal implants suitable for?

  • Those with unhealthy gums and jawbone
  • Those with maxillary bone deficiency
  • Those with jawbone resorption
  • Those who prefer a single surgical procedure
  • Those who do not want additional surgical procedures such as bone grafting

Benefits of Zygomatic, Pterygoid and Nasal Dental Implants

  • No bone grafting required: Insufficient bone tissue is one of the biggest obstacles to implant treatment. Zygomatic, pterygoid and nasal implants can be placed without additional procedures such as bone grafting.
  • Durability and longevity: These titanium implants are firmly attached to the jawbone and offer maximum stability. This means they can be used safely for many years.
  • High success rate: The success of implant treatment depends on it being carried out by an experienced and specialised dentist. Our experienced dentists know the anatomy of the zygomatic bone and the technique of implant placement. This ensures that the implants are placed correctly and their longevity is guaranteed. Computer-guided implant placement also significantly increases the success rate of zygomatic, pterygoid and nasal implants.
  • Alleviate aesthetic concerns: Excessive bone loss in the upper jaw can lead to aesthetic problems in front teeth. These special implants help to eliminate aesthetic problems by providing the necessary support for dentures in such cases.
  • Improve functionality: Tooth loss can cause problems with functions such as chewing and speaking. Dentures with cheek implants can help restore these functions.

Zygomatic, pterygoid and nasal implant treatments begin with a detailed preliminary examination and planning by our experienced dentists. The implants are inserted directly into the corresponding bone using special surgical techniques.

Treatment process of zygomatic, pterygoid and nasal implants:

The treatment of zygomatic, pterygoid and nasal implants begins with a detailed preliminary examination and planning phase. During this phase, your dentist will review your medical history, oral and dental health, and analyse the condition of your bone tissue using imaging techniques such as panoramic x-rays and CT (computed tomography). During the planning phase, the exact position and angle of the implants will be determined. After 3D modelling using computer-aided implant placement software, the number and size of implants are determined and the treatment plan is drawn up. The surgical procedure, which is one of the most important stages of zygomatic, pterygoid and nasal implant treatment, is performed by our experienced dentists under sterile conditions using specialised surgical techniques. The implants are placed in pre-determined positions to ensure the highest level of comfort and safety for our patients.

While conventional implants are usually placed in several stages and require a recovery period of several months, these special implants are usually placed in a single surgical procedure. This can speed up the treatment process, but the course of treatment can vary from person to person and depends on the surgeon's experience, the technology used, the patient's general health, lifestyle (use of tobacco products, etc.) and oral hygiene. After treatment, zygomatic implants can be used for many years with regular dental check-ups and proper oral care.
